About A Decade Since When.com
The very first client I had when I landed back in the Bay Area as a lawyer was a group of guys with a consulting shop called Active Site. They had been advising different web properties (the worked with Homestead, among others) while trying to chose what to pursue themselves. They landed on building an online calendar company that became When.com.
Working with the When.com team was a great pleasure and a great education. The founding team of Ted Barnett, James Joaquin, Tony Espinoza and Joe Beninato, could not have been better guys to work with. And the venture had a great outcome all around. We closed the sale of When.com to AOL a matter of days before the first anniversary of the company (the When guys threw an amazing party to celebrate their anniversary and sale).
The When.com guys have gone on to build some impressive companies. James became the CEO of Ofoto and now Xoom. Ted ran big chunks of AOL and then product at Ofoto. Tony ran When.com inside AOL before leaving to build the Kontiki platfrom and then the best recording studio in San Francisco. And Joe recently launched his latest company, Presto, at the Wall Street Journal conference. Here's a picture of me, James and Joe at the conference.
