Could it be possible? The return of SaysMe

Comments

My rule when listening to a piece of new and usually "difficult" music is to sit still, be polite, and never grimace, because the only ones in the audience for this non-melodic torture will be the composer's relatives, and only the very closely related ones, at that. All his friends will have been "oh, so sorry, too bad, what a shame," busy. His mother is probably going to be sitting directly behind me, and out of sympathy for all the hours she had to spend sitting beside her kid making him practice, (and my God, for this cacaphonous mess,) she needs all the support I can offer.

As for Beethoven's Eroica (played at Tanglewood on your parents' first date so we joke that it is "our song,") you shouldn't have to count movements. You should be able to "mentally" hum along with every note and therefore know exactly when it ends. And that isn't easy for the uninitiated, because Beethoven didn't just do a final drum roll and say, "It's over now." He dragged on and on those final percussive endings, which is fine because unlike the piece of music you wrote about in Says Me, one isn't anxious for the glorious notes of a Beethoven symphony to end.

Welcome back to Says Me.
